InsuJet: Canada’s First Needle-Free Insulin Delivery System

Insujet

InsuJet, now available in Canada through Sol-Millennium Medical, is the country’s first needle-free insulin injector. Designed for adults and children aged six and older with diabetes, InsuJet delivers insulin via jet injection—a high-pressure stream that penetrates the skin through a tiny nozzle orifice, depositing insulin into the subcutaneous tissue in less than 0.3 seconds.

Key Features of Insujet:

  • Needle-free: Ideal for individuals with needle phobia.

  • Adjustable dosing: Administers 4–50 units per injection (0.04–0.5 mL).

  • Versatile insulin compatibility: Works with U100 insulins, including rapid-acting, regular, NPH, long-acting (e.g., glargine, detemir, degludec), and premixed formulations.

  • Multiple loading options: Compatible with 3 mL cartridges, 10 mL vials, and insulin pens (with appropriate adaptors).

  • Reusable: Each device can be used for up to 5,000 injections.

Who Can Use It:

  • Suitable for patients with a higher BMI.

  • Children (6–12 years): Administered by caregivers.

  • Adolescents (12–18 years): Can self-inject with proper training.

  • Not recommended for individuals with visual, physical, or cognitive impairments that prevent proper use, or those with skin conditions like psoriasis.

Safety and Side Effects:

Common side effects include minor bleeding, bruising, raised white bumps, and discomfort. A comfort ring accessory is available to reduce bruising. To minimize infection risk, always clean the injection site with an alcohol swab and replace consumables as directed.

Patients on blood thinners should use InsuJet with caution, and stop use if bruising or bleeding becomes severe. Uncomfortable injections may result from injecting cold insulin or near a nerve ending.

Usage Guidelines:

  • Always use a separate device for each insulin type to avoid cross-contamination.

  • Color-coded labels help differentiate devices and insulin types.

  • Store in the provided case between 5°C–40°C.

  • Do not exceed expiration dates or injection limits.

Availability:

InsuJet and accessories (nozzles, adaptors, comfort ring) are available through pharmacy wholesalers. Each kit includes the InsuJet Injector V5, carry case, instructions, and color labels. Insulin and adaptors are not included and must be supplied separately.

InsuJet offers a safe, effective, and needle-free alternative to traditional insulin injections, particularly beneficial for those with needle anxiety or at risk of needlestick injuries.
