What Are Compounded Medications?

You have likely heard of compounded medications when it comes to pharmacy practice, but did you ever look into what they are? Compounded products are custom medications to fit unique needs of patients that cannot be met with mass-produced products. Compounded medications fit well in our business model at VWV where we are never about a one-size-fits-all healthcare model, but instead about customized and individually tailored healthcare solutions. In fact, our Co-founding Pharmacist, Dominic has been trained with the PCCA (Professional Compounding Centres of America) in order to improve his knowledge of compounded medications. Compounded medications could be prescribed and prepared for all kinds of health conditions from pain conditions to acne and diaper rash.

What Are PAIN Compounded Medications?

Patients who have taken oral pain medications have likely experienced at least one side effect. Typical side effects of pain medications can include stomach upset, increased blood pressure and with some stronger opioid medications drowsiness, constipation and even possibly addiction. In addition, oral anti-inflammatory medications are generally incompatible with blood thinning medications. Compounded pain creams exert their effects locally for the most part and only a very small amount of medication gets into the systemic circulation, significantly reducing the risk for any of the systemic side effects mentioned above. Such pain creams can be further customized into various bases depending on the desired properties - some bases are better for medication absorption, others offer better beyond-use dates and others are more cost-friendly.

What Are ACNE Compounded Medications?

When it comes to acne, compounded medications can be beneficial as there are so many factors that come into play when treating acne. Unfortunately, no single commercially made product can address all such factors. Taking patient skin type into consideration is important. For example, acne which is inflammatory in nature is treated with different ingredients than acne without inflammation. Furthermore, if there are factors such as hyperpigmentation or uneven skin tone present specific ingredients could be put into these compounded medications to better help treat these issues.

What Are DIAPER RASH Compounded Medications?

Diaper Dermatitis is a combination of multiple factors such as fungal infection, inflammation and skin dryness. Topical treatments need different agents addressing each of these components often leading to multiple layer applications. In order to simplify the treatment for parents and their beloved babies, we can provide an all-in-one compounded topical treatment targeting all the underlying elements of diaper rash.
